Does recycling make a difference? Do you really need to separate your waste? When it comes to waste, there are a lot of myths and misconceptions floating around. As one of the leading skip bin hire providers in Sydney, we’ve heard them all!
But what is the truth? In a commitment to help you understand our mission of protecting and preserving the environment through proper waste management, we’re here to bust five of the common myths we often hear.
Here is the REAL truth about recycling and waste management.
1. All recycling goes to a landfill
Definitely not! A lot of people believe their recycling just goes to landfill. This is not accurate. Recyclables are sent to material recovery facilities, where they are recycled and manufactured into new items. This is especially true for materials in a green waste skip bin as all, if not most, can be recycled.
However, it is important to note that putting the wrong item in a recycling bin can contaminate the recyclable content. If contaminated, recyclables can be redirected to a landfill if deemed unrecyclable.
2. One person recycling won’t make a difference in limiting landfill
Not true! The power of one single person recycling is incredibly underestimated. You may think recycling alone won’t go far because you are one person. In reality, individual efforts to recycle contribute to the total positive impact towards sustainability.
By recycling, you are an extra person contributing to the movement. In saying that, if you don’t recycle, you can also have a significant negative impact. So even if you live alone or are the only one in your household to recycle, still make sure to do so.
3. It takes less energy to manufacture items from scratch than it does to recycle
False; it takes more energy to manufacture new items than it does to recycle. The misconception is that if recycling requires more energy than manufacturing a new product, why bother recycling?
In truth, it actually takes less energy to recycle items. It saves a lot of energy, which can be reused elsewhere.
4. Separating waste is unnecessary
This is not true. Waste needs to be separated in order to properly dispose of the correct items and send them to the right waste facilities. As mentioned earlier about recycling, sorting your rubbish can make a huge difference in whether all the collected waste can be properly recycled further or not.
Therefore, ensuring that suitable waste goes into the correct bins is essential. This is not just true for your general curbside bins but also for skip bins. It is another reason we go through all skip bin content to ensure all waste is separated correctly.
5. Recycling doesn’t make a big difference to the environment
Wrong! Recycling does make a massive difference to the environment. Sending more items to landfill increases the contribution to greenhouse emissions.
By recycling and limiting what is sent to landfill, studies have proven that it does help conserve limited resources. As recyclable materials are already refined and processed, manufacturing the second time around requires less energy when compared to using natural resources for first-time manufacturing.
