The trickiest skip bin deliveries of 2021

With 2022 just beginning, it is time to reflect on the closing chapter for the year that was 2021. Another year jam-packed with twists and turns, we are proud to say that our team at Matt’s Skip Bins took everything in their stride! But that doesn’t mean it went utterly uneventful!

Like other years, our skilled drivers were faced with an array of challenges when it came to skip bin deliveries. Visiting countless properties in our operation, deliveries are a great way to keep our team on their toes, with the challenges we see ensuring no day is the same. Ranging in circumstances and challenges, we want to share some of the trickiest deliveries our drivers conquered.

Take a look into some of the testing situations our trucks and drivers found themselves in below.

Bushy surroundings

With our service areas based in the Western Sydney region, our drivers often face wild terrain and foliage during drop-offs. While it doesn’t make our jobs impossible, it can certainly make it a challenge when trying to enter and navigate through a property.

Overhanging trees are a common dilemma for our deliveries. It can create an issue for the arms of our trucks when putting the skip bin down. But as shown here at this property in September, we can find a safe spot around or past the tree branches to get the work done with a bit of manoeuvring.

A similar situation occurred the following month in October. Dropping off a bin, our truck was flirting with the branches of a tree. Luckily, just like the drop off the previous month, there was enough room for the arms to be outstretched; we just needed to duck past first before extending the skip loader.

A common issue we experience with large amounts of greenery is that it makes it harder to enter a driveway. Thick hedging can be like a wall, if not more complicated, with the possibility of loose branches getting tangled through our trucks.

Overhanging branches and big bushes hinder the vision of our drivers during deliveries. With caution and careful navigation past the greenery, not just to the sides but also above, we ensured our truck fit.

Sloped driveways

Have you ever tried to make a heavy delivery on a sloped property? Let us tell you – it is not a simple task! With sloped driveways come many considerations. The challenges that come with it can range from levelling the truck to finding a stable spot for the skip bin to stay. Properties with sloped driveways can be a deceiving situation that takes skill and patience.

Often seen when delivering skip bins to customers in the Blue Mountains, sloped driveways are not uncommon in our trade. Check out this delivery from the start of the year in January. Not only was it a tight driveway, but it also had a steep slope. Of course, we still got the job done!

Later in the year saw another sloped driveway that was a little more deceiving. With some quick thinking, our driver used bricks to level out the skip bin loader so we could make the drop off possible. This one is undoubtedly a testament to our team’s innovation and flexibility.

Going downhill isn’t always the issue with slopes. Trying to reverse uphill can also be a tricky task! Luckily, this driveway we saw in February wasn’t too much of a test. While it was tight and steep, we were able to tick it off the list without any dramas.

Off-road adventures

We also often encounter off-road experiences. This is usually seen with our skip bins delivered to Hawkesbury, where there are a lot of properties with acreage. While this generally means there is plenty of space to drive and place the skip, many roads and driveways that are off-road can create their own set of problems.

An excellent example of this is a property we visited back in August. Following recent rainfall, the designated skip location was surrounded by muddy puddles, which can cause a messy situation. Luckily, we were in and out when swapping the full bin with an empty one, avoiding getting bogged!

Another time we went off-road was just a month later, in September. Travelling down a private dirt driveway would be a concern for specific vehicles, but the off-road surfaces are no match for our sturdy trucks!

Tight properties

Tight properties will always be an inevitable, looming factor in our day-to-day deliveries. This is a frequent issue for communal properties such as business parks and unit complexes. Lucky for our customers, our drivers are masters at creeping their way through tight spaces and tricky properties, making drop-offs still possible.

An exemplary scenario is this drop-off we made to a unit in May. With close neighbours and a shared driveway, it was certainly a mission. But with precision and planning, we successfully provided our clients with their hire!

Later towards the year saw another tricky communal property. With our client at the back of the townhouse complex, we reversed our way into the tight space towards the end, dropping their bin in the requested spot.

Another time we were faced with a tight situation was this property we visited in February. The bin was set to be placed in the backyard, making it difficult due to the limited access available at the front, restricting our path. Our driver organised with the owner to come in from the rear, utilising the grass patch behind the property to remove a fence panel to place the bin efficiently.
